The JD-ICE joint doctorate is a three-year international doctoral program with a total of 180 ECTS. Doctoral students must follow the doctoral course under the supervision of two different institutions: University of Genoa (primary institution) and Queen Mary University of London (secondary institution for the Interactive and Cognitive Environments curriculum) or Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (institution secondary for the Self-Aware Autonomous Systems curriculum).
During the three-year duration of the doctoral course, the student must obtain the necessary credits by carrying out the following activities:
Courses (40 - 60 ECTS)
- Participation in doctoral courses specific to the research project (15 - 20 ECTS): PhD students must follow specific courses for their research project at their primary institution and are encouraged to attend courses at the secondary institution. Each doctoral course with a duration of no less than 20 hours and with a final learning assessment is equivalent to 5 ECTS.
- Participation in doctoral schools (20 - 25 ECTS): PhD students must participate in at least two doctoral schools in research areas specific to their project. Each doctoral school is equivalent to 10 ECTS.
- Participation in other courses relating to transversal or non-technical skills (5 - 10 ECTS max). Each course of this type with a duration of no less than 20 hours and with a final learning assessment is equivalent to 5 ECTS.
- Participation in seminars, tutorials (0 – 5 ECTS)
Research activities (80 – 110 ECTS)
- Admission to the following year based on the annual report of research activities (20 - 30 ECTS)
- Admission of the doctoral thesis to external evaluation (40 ECTS)
- Supervisors' evaluation of research progress during the year (10 – 20 ECTS)
- Admission to the next phase at the secondary institution (10 – 20 ECTS)
Scientific publications and awards (10 - 40 ECTS)
- Scientific publications: PhD students can demonstrate their research skills through scientific articles accepted in refereed international journals or conferences. (10 – 30 ECTS). Each publication is evaluated (up to 5 ECTS) by the supervisors and the teaching staff upon admission to the following year on the basis of its relevance to the research objective and the scientific parameters of the sectors involved.
- International recognition of scientific contributions (0 - 10 ECTS): any international recognition of the student's scientific contribution (such as an award for the best article) is evaluated (up to 5 ECTS) by the supervisors and the teaching body upon admission to the following year based on the relevance to the research objective and the scientific parameters of the sectors involved.

- Presentations of research progress during periodic meetings with supervisors and the teaching staff (10 – 15 ECTS)
- Presentations at scientific conferences, seminars or workshops (0 – 10 ECTS)
