“Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems” and “Cognitive Self-Aware Ego-Things”

In the context of the Joint Doctorate in Interactive and Cognitive Environments, the two PhD courses titled “Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems” and “Cognitive Self-Aware Ego-Things” will be held by Pamela Zontone and Carlo Regazzoni. The first course will be held on June 25, 26, 27, and July 1, 2, 2025, while the second from July 7 to 11, 2025. Both courses will be conducted in-person and online (using the Microsoft Teams platform). They will be held in English and will include lab sessions using MATLAB.

Topic of the courses

Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems: The course will cover the fundamentals of Cognitive Dynamic Systems, focusing on Dynamic Bayesian Networks, Bayesian filtering, and unsupervised learning algorithms, using data from multiple sensors with varying dimensions. Practical examples and corresponding results, including lab exercises using MATLAB, will also be discussed.

Cognitive Self-Aware Ego-Things: The course aims at providing PhD Candidates with knowledge of the basic state of the art and advanced theories/techniques for learning from multisensory signals and data Bayesian models for jointly predicting, processing, filtering, and interpreting observed interactions.

The two courses can be seen as complementary and sequential. The first one has a more introductory and cross-disciplinary approach, making it also suitable for PhD students from various fields. The second is more focused on Machine Learning applications and generative models for enhancing self-awareness in autonomous systems. However, both courses are designed to be taken independently.

Schedule and enrollment

The lesson times in the two courses will be as follows:
“Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems” (20 hours)
- Wed 25/06, Thu 26/6, Tue 1/7, Wed 2/7: 2-6 pm
- Fri 27/06: 9am-1pm

“Cognitive Self-Aware Ego-Things” (25 hours)
- Mon 7/7, Wed 9/7, Thu 10/7: 2-7 pm
- Tue 8/7: 3-7 pm
- Fri 11/07: 9am-1pm and 3pm-5pm

The exam will take place at the end of each course, and the modality will be agreed upon. Participation is open and free for students from all PhD programs. Interested attendees must register by filling in the registration form no later than June 20th, 2025, indicating participation in the first course, the second, or both:
