“Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems” and “Generative Models and Incremental Learning for Self-Aware Ego-Things”

In the context of the Joint Doctorate in Interactive and Cognitive Environments, the two PhD courses titled “Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems” and “Generative Models and Incremental Learning for Self-Aware Ego-Things” will be held by Pamela Zontone and Carlo Regazzoni. The first course will be held on July 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 2026,  while the second from September 7 to 11, 2026. Both courses will be conducted in-person and online (using the Microsoft Teams platform). They will be held in English and will include lab sessions using MATLAB..

Topic of the courses

Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems: The course will cover the fundamentals of Cognitive Dynamic Systems, focusing on Dynamic Bayesian Networks, Bayesian filtering, and unsupervised learning algorithms, using data from multiple sensors with varying dimensions. Practical examples and corresponding results, including lab exercises using MATLAB, will also be discussed.

Generative Models and Incremental Learning for Self-Aware Ego-Things: The course aims at providing PhD Candidates with knowledge of the basic state of the art and advanced theories/techniques for Machine Learning applications, generative models and incremental learning for enhancing self-awareness in autonomous systems.

The two courses can be seen as complementary and sequential. The first one has a more introductory and cross-disciplinary approach, making it also suitable for PhD students from various fields. The second is more focused on Machine Learning applications and generative models for enhancing self-awareness in autonomous systems. However, both courses are designed to be taken independently.

Schedule and enrollment

The lesson times in the two courses will be as follows:
“Introduction to Cognitive Dynamic Systems” (20 hours)
- Tue 7/7, Fri 10/7, Mon 13/7: 9am-1pm
- Wed 8/7: Thu 9/7: 2pm-6pm

“Generative Models and Incremental Learning for Self-Aware Ego-Things” (25 hours)
- Mon 7/9, Tue 8/9, Wed 9/9, Fri 11/9: 10am-1pm, 3-5 pm
- Thu 10/9: 2-7 pm

The exam will take place at the end of each course, and the modality will be agreed upon. Participation is open and free for students from all PhD programs.

Registration is required by Sunday, July 5, 2026 (for the first course or both courses) and by Saturday, September 5, 2026 (for the second course only, including those who choose to attend it later), by completing the following form:
